Former Kenyan rugby international Innocent Simiyu has kicked off the 2019 Magharibi Michezo Awards sponsorship with 50,000 shillings contribution towards this year’s event set for 23rd of December.
Simiyu, who coached the Kenya Sevens squad between 2016 and 2018 has together with his brothers Victor Sudi and Nato Simiyu committed to support the development of rugby in the Magharibi region in line with the Magharibi Michezo Awards Legacy program that seeks to support talent nurturing, capacity building and infrastructure development.
“We are very excited to partner with Magharibi awards. It has surely been a very good journey for the Magharibi awards team and as Suwana Investments we are delighted to be part of this program that appreciates and supports sports development in the Magharibi region.” Simiyu noted.
Having played, captained and coached Kenya during the World Rugby Sevens Series, Simiyu reiterated the need to invest more in the Magharibi region especially by giving the young talents technical opportunities.
“This recognition by the Magharibi team is a good starting point to encourage current and future players to work harder towards achieving excellence on the pitch and court.” He added.
During the 2018 edition of the Magharibi Michezo Awards , The Simiyu family of Coach Innocent Simiyu, Victor Sudi and Nato Simiyu were awarded for their contribution towards supporting Kenyan sports.
The family has also started a youth development center in their home backyard in Bukembe where they dedicate their time to support young players achieve technical skills.
They recently sponsored the Bukembe Rugby Youth team on a tour of Uganda where they played a series of friendly matches in one of the lined up exposure opportunities.
Now in its 7th year , The Magharibi Michezo Awards (MMA) is the premier sports awards ceremony in Western Kenya geared towards rewarding the achievements of the region’s sportsmen and women while celebrating their excellence as well as encouraging the next crop of sporting talent across the sports spectrum.
Through the legacy program , The MMA further seeks to empower local coaches through skills and leadership development by training them and providing equipment to enable them develop and nurture local talent.
